One of the most essential things we teach our students is the importance of setting goals: What’s our intended success rate for this flip?  What do we want to improve during the next run-through?  What do we want to accomplish at the next contest?

It’s no different for us.  As coaches, we need to make long-term plans for our athletes.  We need to assess our students’ strengths and weaknesses, identify the types of improvements that need to be made to put them in the best positions to be successful, and come up with game plans for each lesson, each competition, and each season.

To get the most out of your students, your goals need to be dynamic and adjust based on where you are in the competitive season.  You’re going to have a different set of goals, and be utilizing a different set of teaching strategies, in October than in June.  Your short-term goals will vary depending on your point in time relative to the end of the season.

Education Day at Jewel of Atlantis will walk you through a single competitive baton season—starting in mid-September and going through your national championships in July—and give you the tips and tricks to make the most of every single month.  From skill assessment in September, upgrading choreography in November, designing training modules in January, moderating expectations as contests get started in March, and building mental toughness through the spring . . . we’ll break the calendar down and help you ensure that your athletes hit their peak at the right time.

In doing so, we’ll go beyond the classroom setting and make use of live twirlers for demonstrations and interactive workshops.  We’ll also provide advice for how best to leverage outside feedback, both in the form of guest instructors as well as making use of judges’ critique tapes and comment sheets.

If you want success in July, you have to start in September.  We’ll walk you through it, month by month.

Note from Sheri,

Our vision is to offer as close to a world judging experience as it can get!  As a Master Level Judge, extensive preparation is done prior to arriving and judging a world championship.  As you know, the standard in-person or virtual existing Master Level workshop is an 18-hour (presentation and testing) situation over a 2-day period. The WBTF and The Jewel has allowed me to modify this workshop.  Our workshop will be providing pre-work virtually through 4 Required Zoom Sessions prior to attending the workshop at the Jewel in the Bahamas! This way,  you get to analyze, absorb, apply, test, then rejuvenate!  An added bonus that the Jewel is offering is an optional live judging opportunity. Applicants will be able to practice judge Short Program and Freestyle while getting feedback from a certified Master Level Judge at Sunday’s competition!  In essence, you are getting an opportunity to apply your skills in a live setting without affecting your test results.  You will come away with an insight of your strengths and weaknesses as a Master Level applicant; so, you can customize your future learning endeavors of adjudication.  This will truly be an innovative approach to offering you the support needed to increase your opportunity for success!
